Commitment to the Camden Community – American Water’s 2022 Annual Investment Report
American Water is proud to call Camden home. In 2022, American Water, New Jersey American Water and the American Water Charitable Foundation were proud to donate $1.24 million to support local Camden organizations and their efforts, contribute over 400 volunteer hours and participate in nearly 50 community and workforce development events.
American Water is happy to share the 2022 Annual Camden Community Investment Report. Together, with New Jersey American Water and the American Water Charitable Foundation, we will continue to strengthen, support and enhance Camden’s rising.

American Water Celebrates Earth Day in Camden
In April, American Water and New Jersey American Water celebrated Earth Day in Camden by raising awareness and participating in community-wide events throughout the city. Representatives from American Water and New Jersey American Water kicked things off by joining Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen, and other dignitaries to announce a series of Earth Day community events. Following the announcement, American Water and New Jersey American Water were delighted to participate in the following events:
- Camden Environmental Summit, sponsored by New Jersey American Water
- Earth Day Celebration at Phoenix Festival, hosted by Camden Community Partnership
- Camden Strong Clean-up Kickoff

American Water’s A Day “On” – Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
American Water celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service with an annual day “ON.” Representatives from three local Camden organizations: Better Tomorrows, Heart of Camden, and Joseph’s House of Camden, spent the morning with American Water employees during the company’s Drive-Thru Donation Jam. Supplies and goods like laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, hats & gloves, footwear, and sports equipment were collected to support the organizations.
In addition to the generosity of employee donations, the American Water Charitable Foundation donated $2,500 to each organization in support of furthering their missions and continued positive impact in the Camden community.
Dreaming Big for the Future – Women of The Dream College & Career Readiness Workshop
Early this year, 26 Camden high school seniors visited American Water’s headquarters to meet with Women of the Dream alumni, who are recent college graduates or current students, to learn and prep for college life. In addition, the students had a chance to dive into a careers-focused segment where they networked with some American Water employees who shared their career journeys and ‘nuggets of knowledge’ as these young ladies prepare for their bright futures.
The American Water Charitable Foundation was proud to donate $7,000 to support the 2023 Women of The Dream STEM Conference. An annual conference established for girls in grades 7-12 to explore careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in efforts to help create a foundation for the girls to pursue related career fields and help narrow the gender gap.
Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP)
New Jersey American Water, the City of Camden and American Water Contract Services are committed to keeping the water flowing for customers in Camden. That’s why we want to tell you about the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP), a federally funded customer assistance program that provides emergency assistance to families experiencing hardships with their water bills.
To be eligible for LIHWAP Assistance:
- Applicants must be water/wastewater customers who are responsible for paying their water and sewer bills directly to the utility.
- Applicants’ total gross household income must be at or below 60% of the state median Income ($6,662 monthly or $79,942 annual income for a household of four). The LIHWAP frequently asked questions webpage (waterassistance.nj.gov) has additional information about maximum income limits and other helpful tips. Participants in the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) are automatically eligible for LIHWAP assistance as long as they are water/wastewater bill holders.
How to apply:
- Visit waterassistance.nj.gov or call NJ211
- People who do not have access to computers or the internet can call 1-800-510-3102 to be directed to one of the community action agencies for assistance.
- Representatives are available to assist in completing the application in person, Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Camden City Hall, Suite 300 - The Mayor’s Division of Constituent Services, 520 Market Street, Camden, NJ 08101. Questions? Call: 856-757-7200
Reminder: City of Camden Water and Sewer Customers
American Water is no longer accepting in-person water and sewer payments at the PNC Bank (Broadway branch) location. Customers can pay their bills in person at City Hall, 520 Market Street, Rm. 117.
Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Acceptable payment methods include: cash, check or money order, and Credit Card ($1.95 processing fee applies)
