Tennessee American Water Shares Time-lapse Video of Replacement of 19th Century Basin

Construction Project One of $29 Million Capital in 2020

Chattanooga, Tenn. (April 28, 2020) – Tennessee American Water is sharing a time-lapse video of a sediment basin construction project. The new basin will replace a century-old one and will allow Tennessee American Water to clean water more quickly and efficiently. The video may be viewed here and captures demolition of the old basin and first stages of the new one from January 8 to April 16.

“We know that at the end of every tap is a family counting on us to provide safe, clean water, especially now as we are dealing with a public health emergency,” said Tennessee American Water President Darlene Williams. “That is why it is imperative that we continue to repair and renew aging infrastructure like this basin as well as pipes in the ground, pumps, fire hydrants, valves, and other equipment to keep our systems operating efficiently,”

The sediment basin construction is one of $29 million in Tennessee American Water infrastructure capital projects for 2020. A basin is a large pool of water with equipment that settles out the sediment as part of the cleaning and treatment process for drinking water.

As a water service provider, Tennessee American Water provides an essential service. Water utilities are part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s “critical infrastructure sectors,” as safe drinking water is critical to protecting public health.
