Kentucky American Water Facilities Earn Special Recognition for Optimal Performance

Lexington, Ky., (May 15, 2020) – Two of Kentucky American Water’s water treatment plants have again earned special recognition from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for their performance. The company’s Richmond Road Station in Lexington and Kentucky River Station II in Owen County were each honored for meeting the 2019 Area-Wide Optimization Program (AWOP) goals for water turbidity in 2019.

AWOP is a multi-state initiative administered through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Its purpose is to encourage drinking water systems to achieve water quality optimization goals that are more stringent than regulations. AWOP provides tools and approaches for drinking water systems to meet water quality optimization goals, which in turn provides consumers with an increased and sustained level of public health protection. The program places particular emphasis on turbidity removal. Turbidity is a measurement of particles in the water, including soil, algae, bacteria, viruses and other substances.

“This special recognition is a reflection of our company’s commitment to providing high quality tap water to our customers,” said David Farrar, vice president of operations for Kentucky American Water. “By going above and beyond what is required in the water treatment and monitoring processes, our team is positioning us well for not only meeting today’s water treatment challenges but those we may face in the future, too. Safety of the drinking water we provide is of utmost importance to us. We are pleased to participate in the AWOP program and appreciate our team members being honored in this manner.”
