Kentucky American Water Shares Simple Ways to Make Earth Day Every Day
Celebrate Earth Day by Participating in Drug Take Back Day Event on April 27
Kentucky American Water delivers high-quality drinking water to 560,000 people statewide. Protecting water at its source is an important part of treating and delivering water and wastewater service.
Protecting and conserving our water resources requires a collective effort from the community. Some materials can impact waterways if poured down the drain, flushed down the toilet, or dumped on the ground. This Earth Day, join us and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and treat every day like Earth Day by adopting the tips below:
• Join a community cleanup event
• Turn off the water to brush your teeth and shave
• Collect rainwater to use in your garden
• Use reusable water bottles
• Grow an organic garden
• Run full loads of laundry and dishes

Additionally, Saturday, April 27, is the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. This day encourages the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes in a safe and eco-friendly manner.
In Fayette County, the Take Back Day event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kentucky American Water, located at 2300 Richmond Road. Representatives from the local Drug Enforcement Administration office, the Lexington Police Department, and the Fayette County Sheriff’s office will be on hand to take unwanted items. Participants should remain in their cars and hand items to the officers.
Items accepted at Take Back Day include prescription and over-the-counter pills, vitamins, medicated ointments and lotions, and pet medication. Liquids, aerosol cans and needles are not accepted on Take Back Day.
Take Back Day events help keep medications from getting into the wrong hands and also provide an opportunity for medications to be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way instead of being flushed down the toilet or poured down a drain, which leads to entering area waterways.
